The second beetle mentioned in this thread has now finally been repaired progressed to the point that the owner broke the shifter getting it into gear. A clutch that doesn t engage fully or slips under heavy load is the normal failure mode of a worn out friction disc of pressure plate that has lost its tension. Replacing the cable will allow you to engage the clutch and change gears once more. Clutch engages at floor check my thinking update.

Bad cable is 90 cause. The clutch cable runs to a throw out fork and bearing. Non last this long. I m updating this because two identical cars with the same symptoms had two different causes.

No free play is way too loose. Failed clutch release bearing. Clutch pedals that go from the rest position to full engagement but stay on the floor and don t spring back up indicate a problem. Pedal at floor dis engages it.

When you press the clutch your foot counters the diaphragm spring which presses the friction disc to the flywheel. This is extremely common particularly on older cars.
